Hi, Julia, In my previous school, I had my students for about 40 minutes, so we did this activity for about Each rotation was 5 minutes, so they would have gotten to "date" approximately 6 books. In my current school, I have my students for a full hour. I modified this up a bit recently and did a musical chairs activity, where the students had 3 minutes with the book.
The musical chairs made it move more quickly, and they got to experience lots of books—maybe as many as I didn't have them write anything down when we did musical chairs; we just rotated. I put a stack of about 5 books under each chair so if they ended up on the same chair again, they could choose to pick something new or keep reading the one they tried the first time they landed there. Hello there. I am teaching high school juniors this year and was wanting to do something similar with them.
Do you think this would be an effective activity? I am really wanting to promote choice reading this year. Some may grumble at the moving around part, especially if you have them first or second period. I love this idea!

Each table contains 4 texts to preview Students individually preview the text; examine the cover, read the blurb on the back or inside the dust jacket, and jump into an initial reading of the first few paragraphs.
As an intro to titles on offer for Book Clubs or Lit. Each table would hold copies of the same text, and students would have the opportunity to make informed decision about which texts they would like to read over the course of the Lit. As a way to preview texts in a classroom library- In addition to book talks, book speed dating is a great way to introduce students to the diverse genres of books within a classroom library.
In this format, each table would have different book titles of the same genre. Each student is responsible for previewing one of the texts and sharing that preview with the group, so more time would probably be needed on step 4. To empower students to share their favourite texts- By the midpoint of the year, your classroom community of readers has started to develop lists of their own favourite texts. Have each student bring their favourite book to the speed dating.
That text goes into the pile, and is selected by another person to preview. The group goes through the process as described above, but add step 4 b in which students contribute which book they brought and why.
We talked books for as many minutes as it took for every student to talk one-on-one with every other student. It was exhausting. And wonderful. Every student wrote down at least one book. Some wrote down several. I teach juniors in high school.
Before this year, most of my students did not consider themselves readers. They have had to learn what it means to. The moment I stop holding up books at the beginning of class, reading a bit, and encouraging them to give it a try, many they stop reading. They are one year and a couple of months away from graduating high school, and they are Baby Readers, fledglings not ready to leave the roost and fly off on their own. In more ways than one, I know.
We read aloud. We line whiteboard rails with new titles. We do book tastings and speed dating with books. We celebrate our readers and exhaust our arsenal of book-loving […]. Like Like. The more students talk to one another about their reading the better your chances of getting all students to read. One favorite activity in my classroom is speed dating with a book. Reading aloud poems on a regular basis has the same effect as talking about books […]. I have done the speed dating with AP titles to get my preAP juniors reading above their level and to prepare them for their senior year of AP Lit.
The librarian is a huge help because she pulls all the titles in advance. Then when I take my classes to the library, they spend about minutes at a table full of books, perusing, evaluating, sampling. Then they switch to the next table, and so it goes for the class period. They are able to preview and choose what they want instead of my assigning a whole-class novel.
Of course there are those students who fake-read, but many find titles they never would have discovered on their own. I have so much to learn about continuing to create and strengthen a culture of literacy in my classroom. The coolest part about it is that I can flip over to Book Talks with other students and now start cross-pollinating, making recommendations to students based on what other students have been reading.
I applaud all of you who roll up your sleeves and hold steadfast to this endeavor. Like Liked by 2 people. I felt rejuvenated just reading this…I can anticipate the buzz in Room Like Liked by 1 person. I used to do this with vocabulaty. Each team would divide up the words, look up the meanings and decide how to get that definition across so it could become a part of the standard repetoire of usage for a classmate.
Then the sides would switch. You are commenting using your WordPress. You are commenting using your Google account. You are commenting using your Twitter account. You are commenting using your Facebook account. Notify me of new comments via email.
